Vice-Chancellor Professor Don Nutbeam has the pleasure of inviting you to a showcase of current research in the areas of Ageing and Neuroscience in the Presence of Dame Mary Fagan DCVO, HM Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire.
Wednesday 28 September, 2011 from 12pm to 5pm
Turner Sims Concert Hall, University of Southampton Highfield, Southampton SO17 1BJ
The population of the United Kingdom is ageing. In 2011 there are 5 million people aged 75 and over, comprising 8% of the population; by 2031 this figure is projected to rise to 8.3 million and 12%. Estimates of the number of people living with dementia published by Alzheimer's Research UK suggest that there are 820,000 people with dementia living in England and Wales.
Elderly people are the major users of health and social care services and the demographic changes combined with cuts in public sector spending means that supporting older people to continue to live independently in the community is an increasingly critical issue.
Planning health and social care services for older people with high support needs requires a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying diseases such as dementia and macular degeneration. Accurate forecasts of the future number of people with such care needs are vital.
Research at the University of Southampton in the areas of ageing, neuroscience and social policy is at the forefront of improving the evidence base to support better planning and provision.
This multidisciplinary conference on ageing and neuroscience research at the University of Southampton provides an opportunity to hear about our exciting research identifying new mechanisms of disease and new therapeutic strategies and to engage with key stakeholders from the public sector and the community.
